At least 28 dead in fiery aircraft crash in South Korea, Yonhap reports By Reuters

SEOUL (Reuters) – At least 28 people were killed on Sunday when a plane skidded off the runway and crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea, Yonhap news agency reported.

The accident happened when the Jeju Air plane carrying 175 passengers and six crew members on a flight from Thailand landed at an airport in the south of the country, the report said.

According to Yonhap, two people were found alive as the rescue mission continued.

“Authorities were working to rescue people in the tail section,” an airport official told Reuters.

Photos shared by local media showed smoke and flames engulfing parts of the plane.

Acting President Choi Sung-mok, who was appointed as the country’s interim leader on Friday after the previous acting president was ousted amid the ongoing political crisis, has ordered all rescue efforts, his office said.

A spokesman for Jeju Air said the airline was verifying the reports.
