Smart electrical panels are not that new of concept and some already exist in the marketbut generally speaking you don’t want to try to install them yourself as electricity is something you don’t mess with. But at CES 2025Savant, the brand that owns GE Lighting and Savant Power Systems, is showcasing its new Smart Budget system as an alternative to more expensive electrical service upgrades that require a licensed electrician.

The smart budget consists of Savant power modules that can be added to an existing electrical panel. It includes software that adjusts the power output of the electrical panel so that demand never exceeds the home’s capacity, even if you add things like EV charger or demanding appliances such as a washer and dryer.

The app shows you your load and allows you to prioritize and plan your energy usage to stay within your limit.

Typically, if you try to add these electrical requirements, you will be limited by your utility’s service line. For example, I live in a pre-war apartment building with 60 amps. There is no way I can get 100 amps or 200 amps without convincing my utility to do a major service line upgrade that would cost tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars for the entire building. That’s obviously not going to happen, so I’m stuck as I can’t use some demanding appliances. In fact, even my gaming PC sometimes ends up like this too much pull.

With the Savant Smart Budget, in theory, you won’t need to upgrade your utility line. The Savant app allows homeowners to prioritize which devices receive power and when. You can also prioritize how energy is used, monitor consumption live, shed unnecessary loads and balance consumption within your service line limit.

The Savant module should plug right into your existing panel.

All of this will set you back $1,500 and should be available in the second quarter of 2025. That said, while ease is the name of the game, we don’t recommend trying to install the Savant power modules yourself. A licensed electrician is best. Electrical panels can be incredibly dangerous if you don’t disconnect the power from your main breaker before removing the cover.

Aside from Smart Budget, Savant also doesn’t sleep on the rest of the smart home space. In others CES announcementsthe company is launching an extensive range of lighting and smart home devices, including GE’s patented LED bulbs in 2025, expanding Cync family of dynamic effects of lights and outdoor light strips, Cync Smart Keypad Dimmer and Smart Paddle Dimmer and Proseo lighting and shades.
