Days after Israel hit Houthi rebels who fired rockets in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, the Israeli military said on Saturday that a rocket fired from Yemen landed in Tel Aviv, injuring 16 people as a result of broken glass.

The military said 14 others suffered minor injuries as they fled to shelters as air raid sirens sounded by early Saturday morning.

The Houthis released a statement on Telegram saying they had fired a hypersonic ballistic missile at an unspecified military target. The Israeli army said it was investigating and added that “we emphasize that the air defense is not hermetic.”

“One light, one impact and we fell to the ground. A big mess everywhere, broken glasses,” said Bar Katz, a resident of the damaged building.

The attack comes after Israeli airstrikes on Yemen’s Houthi-controlled capital Sana’a and the port city of Hodeida killed at least nine people on Thursday. The strikes came hours after a rocket fired from Yemen hit a school building in central Israel. The Houthis also launched a drone strike targeting an unidentified military target in central Israel on Thursday.

The Israeli army said that the Iran-backed Houthis fired more than 200 rockets and drones during the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. The Houthis have also attacked shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and said they will not stop until a ceasefire is reached in Gaza.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Thursday’s Israeli strikes had caused “significant damage” to Houthi-held Red Sea ports and would lead to an “immediate and significant reduction in port capacity.” The port of Hodeida has played a key role in transporting food to Yemen during the decade-long civil war.

According to information from Al-Ahli Hospital, where the bodies were taken, 12 people, including seven children and two women, were killed as a result of an attack on a house in Gaza City.

A man hugs a body wrapped in a small shroud as mourners gather at a hospital in Gaza City. Women comforted each other as they cried.

In total, the Ministry of Health of Gaza said that 21 people died in the last 24 hours.

More than 45,200 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since a Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023 triggered a 14-month conflict that killed nearly 1,200 people. The Ministry of Health does not distinguish between civilians and fighters, but said more than half of the dead were women and children.

Israel faces heavy international criticism for unprecedented civilian deaths in Gaza. It says it only targets militants and blames Hamas for civilian deaths because its fighters operate in residential areas.

Hospital director Dr. Husam Abu Safiyeh said the facility was facing “severe shortages” and requests for basic medical supplies and ways to maintain oxygen, water and electricity systems were “largely unfulfilled”.

He said that the treatment of 72 wounded is continuing in the hospital.

“There is very little food and we cannot provide food to the wounded,” Safiyeh added. “We are urgently calling on anyone who can provide supplies to help us.”
