Apple to pay $95 million in Siri spying lawsuit

Tech giant Apple On Thursday, it agreed to pay $95 million to settle a proposed class-action lawsuit that alleged its Siri voice assistant violated users’ privacy.

A: initial setting was filed Tuesday evening in federal court in Oakland, California, pending approval by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White.

The plaintiffs alleged that Apple routinely recorded private conversations after they inadvertently activated Siri, adding that those conversations were then disclosed to third parties, including advertisers who served ads to some users. delivered that were tailored to their conversations.

Siri-like voice assistants can be activated in response to certain verbal prompts, which include “hot words” such as “Hey, Siri.”

Two of the plaintiffs claimed that their notes Air Jordan sneakers and Olive Garden restaurants prompted them to receive targeted ads for those products.

Another plaintiff alleged that he received advertising for a branded surgical treatment after he discussed what he believed to be a private conversation with his doctor.

Class members, estimated to number in the tens of millions, can receive up to $20 for each Siri-enabled device they own, e.g. iPhones and Apple watches. The class period runs from September 17, 2014 to December 31, 2024 and began when Siri included the “Hey, Siri” feature.

Apple has denied wrongdoing by agreeing to the settlement.

The $95 million estimate represents about nine hours of profit for Apple, which had net income of about $93.74 billion in its most recent fiscal year.

Attorneys are seeking up to $28.5 million in fees, plus $1.1 million in costs, as compensation from the settlement fund.

Similar litigation is pending on behalf of users Google Voice Assistant In federal court in San Jose, which is part of the same district where the Oakland court is handling the Apple case, the plaintiffs in the Google case are represented by the same companies as in the Apple case.
