Apple is using a feature that uses artificial intelligence to produce news summaries after repeatedly posting headlines riddled with errors, drawing the ire of news organizations such as the BBC and the Washington Post.

Introduced in the fall, the feature sometimes generated headlines that were misleading or outright false. apple announced On Thursday, the company said it would suspend the software while it works on improvements.

CBC News has contacted an Apple spokesperson for more information.

One of the more gruesome headlines claimed that Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself. It was wrongly attributed to the BBC, which reported on it in December was in touch Apple with its concerns.

Other fake headlines say that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegsett has been “fired”, Secretary of State candidate Marco Rubio has been “confirmed” and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been “arrested”. Neither was true.

Reporters Without Borders, a non-profit organization that advocates for freedom of information, issued a statement last month urging Apple to remove the feature, saying it was “deeply concerned about the risks new AI tools pose to media organizations.”

Referring to the headline incident, Mangione said the organization “highlights the failure of AI systems to systematically publish quality information, even when based on journalistic sources.”
