Seven foreign tourists, including an American, were hospitalized in Fiji after drinking cocktails at a resort bar, Fijian authorities said on Monday, weeks after. six tourists died Suspected alcohol poisoning in a separate incident in Laos.

All seven were taken to hospital on Saturday night suffering from “nausea, vomiting and neurological symptoms”, according to Fiji’s health ministry.

Officials said they fell ill after drinking pina colada cocktails at a bar at the five-star Warwick Fiji resort on the Coral Coast, about 45 miles west of the capital Suva.

A Health Ministry spokesman said the seven guests, aged between 18 and 56, included four Australians, one American and two others whose nationalities were not specified.

Tourism Minister William Gavoka said one of the patients was discharged from Sigatoka Hospital near the hotel on Sunday.

Six others were transferred to the larger Lautoka Hospital on the island’s west coast, two of whom were released earlier on Monday, while the other two left later in the day, he said.

He told a press conference that the two patients who remained at Lautoka Hospital were in a “stable condition” in intensive care.

Australian David Sandoe, who said his daughter and granddaughter were hospitalized, told Sky News Australia that their relatives had been released and would fly home on Monday night.

Fiji’s health ministry and police force are investigating the cause, Gavoka said, adding that results from “critical” toxicology tests normally take three or four days.

“Everyone is in disbelief that this is happening.

When asked if the illness could be linked to methanol poisoning, Gavoka said it was “something we don’t believe is possible in Fiji”.

He declined to speculate on the cause, but said it was a “very isolated incident.”

Tourism in Fiji, which attracts about a million people each year, “was usually very safe,” he said.

The minister said that he did not believe that this was the result of some premeditated action.

The hotel bar involved was “very busy” in the evening, he added, but only seven people got sick from the normally “pretty harmless” pina coladas.

A spokeswoman for the Warwick Fiji Hotel said it was investigating and awaiting test results from health authorities.

“We don’t have specific details at this time, but we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our guests,” the spokesperson said.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs said it was providing consular assistance to the two families, but declined to comment further due to “confidentiality obligations”.
