Airbnb is deploying ‘anti-party technology’ to ruin your brand new party

Airbnb has announced that it is implementing to prevent “unauthorized and disruptive parties” from happening in homes on his New Year’s Eve platform. If you’ve been planning to host a reunion, start thinking about a plan B.

The company says it uses machine learning to pre-identify and block high-risk whole-home bookings based on various criteria. Airbnb’s rating takes into account things like length of trip, how far a listing is from your current location, and when you’re trying to book to weed out potentially disruptive parties. If you book a two-night stay the week before New Year’s Eve, you’re likely to tingle Airbnb’s anti-party senses. The company will either block your reservation entirely or direct you to other accommodations.

The party detection technology will be used in countries and regions around the world, according to Airbnb. If you’re trying to book an entire home in the “United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Australia and New Zealand,” you’ll also need to be prepared to stay more than three days and agree to a “mandatory anti-party attestation” to be admitted to a license.

Airbnb’s transformation into the party police has been going on for several years at this point. The company claims to have blocked 74,000 people worldwide from booking an entire home listing for a party in 2023. It is also its machine learning technology to remove unauthorized events before. Airbnb’s tougher stance on events began in earnest in 2019. after five people died in a shooting at an Airbnb listing. Airbnb straight into 2020 and the company now offers homeowners a host of tools to reduce noise complaints, including which can be placed in homes to detect noises above a certain volume.
