After Trump’s 11th-hour calls, GOP rebels swung the vote to Johnson, pushing him to the finish line
President-elect Trump appears to have helped Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., avoid a messy and tight race to lead the House.
Two sources told Fox News Digital that Trump spoke by phone after both Reps. Ralph Norman, RSC, and Keith Self, R-Texas, initially voted for people other than Johnson for speaker.
Self and Norman were seen disappearing into a side room with Johnson and others after the voting was completed but before the voting was officially closed.
They emerged moments later and announced they would both vote for Johnson — cementing the Louisiana Republican’s victory.

Self later confirmed to reporters that he had spoken with Trump multiple times on the phone on Friday.
“I talked to him a few times today,” Self said. “We had a lively discussion.”
He did not provide detailed information about the content of the discussion.
But two people who spoke to Fox News Digital said Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., had put Trump on the phone with Self and Norman after Johnson voted against him.

Mace did not comment, but Fox News Digital saw him and Johnson hugging on the House floor after they and others stayed in the side room.
He was also seen earlier on the floor of the House of Representatives in intense negotiations with Norman.
Norman later confirmed to reporters that he spoke with Trump on Friday.

Self, Norman and Rep. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., each voted for Johnson, who appeared to have put the speaker’s gavel out of reach.

But House leaders have not officially finished the vote as they find a way forward. Meanwhile, GOP lawmakers have been told to be on the House floor immediately to prepare for a second vote.
But a second vote failed, and Johnson was sworn in as speaker Friday afternoon.
