A witness describes an attack on a German Christmas market
Another eyewitness, Gianni Warzecha, told the BBC that he and his girlfriend’s family were listening to Christmas music at the market when “all of a sudden there was a crash and the sound of broken glass”.
“People started to panic. “I saw the car and people on the ground, people were bleeding. There were also children there.
“I was concentrating on giving first aid to people. It took a few minutes for the first ambulances to arrive, but it wasn’t enough because already 200 people were injured.
“Most of the first aid was done by the people there.”
Lars Frohmüller, a reporter from the public broadcaster MDR, who came to the Christmas market in Magdeburg shortly after the attack, told the BBC what he saw.
“There were ambulances, police, lots of firefighters everywhere.
“It was a real chaotic situation. We saw blood on the floor, we saw people sitting next to each other with gold and silver foil around them. And we saw a lot of doctors trying to warm people up and help them with their injuries.
“It’s a big shock. It’s a big shock for every person in Magdeburg and every person in Saxony-Anhalt.”
