The attack comes after Israeli airstrikes on Yemen’s Houthi-controlled capital Sana’a and the port city of Hodeida killed at least nine people on Thursday. The Israeli strikes were in response to the Houthis’ long-range missile that hit an Israeli school building. The Houthis also launched a drone strike targeting an unidentified military target in central Israel on Thursday.

The Israeli military said the Iran-backed Houthis fired more than 200 rockets and drones during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. The Houthis have also attacked shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and said they will not stop until a ceasefire is reached in Gaza.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Thursday’s Israeli strikes had caused “significant damage” to Houthi-held Red Sea ports and would lead to an “immediate and significant reduction in port capacity.” The port of Hodeida has played a key role in transporting food to Yemen during the decade-long civil war.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that there is a risk of further expansion of attacks by both sides in the region.

More than 45,200 Palestinians have died in Gaza since a Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023 killed nearly 1,200 people and sparked a 14-month war. The Ministry of Health does not distinguish between civilians and fighters, but said more than half of the dead were women and children.

Israel faces heavy international criticism for unprecedented civilian deaths in Gaza. It says it only targets militants and blames Hamas for civilian deaths because its fighters operate in residential areas.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health has made an urgent appeal for medical and food supplies to Kamal Advan Hospital in Beit Lahiya, north of Gaza, while the hospital’s director described the situation as dire as the latest Israeli military offensive.

The ministry said that there was continuous gunfire and Israeli shelling near the hospital, adding that “shells hit the third floor and the entrances of the hospital, causing panic.”

Hospital director Dr. Husam Abu Safiyeh said the facility was facing “severe shortages” and requests for basic medical supplies and ways to protect oxygen, water and electricity systems were “largely unfulfilled”.

He said that the treatment of 72 wounded is continuing in the hospital.

“There is very little food and we cannot provide food to the wounded,” Safiye added. “We are urgently calling on anyone who can provide supplies to help us.”

Aid groups have said that Israeli military operations and armed groups have prevented them from distributing aid.

Israel’s military organization, which handles humanitarian work for Gaza, said on Saturday it led an operation that delivered thousands of food packages, flour and water to the northern Beit Hanun area. It was reported that trucks with the UN World Food Program transported them to distribution centers in the area on Friday.

Iran said on Saturday that unknown gunmen killed a local employee of the Iranian embassy in Syria, the official IRNA news agency reported.

In his report, referring to the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmail Baghaei, he said that “terrorists” fired at Dawood Bitaraf’s car last Sunday. It was not reported what he did with the embassy.

Bagai said Iran holds the Syrian interim government responsible for finding and prosecuting those behind the killing. Iran has been a key ally of recently deposed Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.
