A Detroit police He was killed Sunday in a crash on his way home from work on the city’s east side, authorities said.

FOX 2 in Detroit Officer Cameron Richardson has been with the department for more than a year and police described him as a family man with two daughters as well as a military veteran.

“Today, the Detroit Police Department lost Officer Cameron Richardson, who has been with the Department for a year,” the department wrote on X. “Officer Richardson killed in off-duty car accident”.

Interim Chief Todd Bettison told reporters the city had lost “one of Detroit’s finest.”

“He was a good officer, a fine officer who did great service,” Bettison said, adding that Richardson will not be forgotten. “We’re going to wrap our arms around this family.”

The the police said Richardson was heading home from work when he was traveling north on Hoover Street at Greiner Street.

Witnesses told investigators the white van turned left onto Hoover Street and turned directly in front of the Jeep Wrangler Richardson was driving.

When officers arrived at the scene just after midnight, they found Richardson’s Jeep rolled during the crash.

But another car had left the scene.

When pressed, Bettison thanked the Michigan State Police, who said they were able to locate the white van a short distance from the crash.

All occupants of the van were detained, police said, adding that a 28-year-old man was identified as a person of interest. However, that person has not been found yet.

The Detroit Police Department did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for additional information.

“We’ve worked tirelessly since the incident. We’ve executed search warrants,” Bettison said. “We have identified the persons in that white van. We know who the driver is. We ask the driver to surrender.”
