A JetBlue passenger has been charged with opening a plane door after a fight

The FBI has arrested a male passenger after he reportedly opened the door of a JetBlue plane as it taxied down the runway. The incident took place at Logan International Airport in Boston.

NBC News reports that an unknown passenger opened the emergency exit door and activated the latch. According to AP NewsMassachusetts State Police spokesman Tim McGuirk said officers responded to the alert at 7:30 p.m. local time. In addition, McGuirk noted that the doors were opened suddenly and without warning before takeoff.

In addition, the incident occurred on a flight bound for San Juan, Puerto Rico on December 7. CBS News reports that witnesses said the unidentified man had been arguing with his girlfriend, causing him to open the plane’s emergency door and delay the flight.

This was reported by passenger Fred Wynn, who was on board WCVB TV that the couple was arguing on the phone. The passengers quickly panicked and asked him to stop. However, the police eventually arrived and removed him from the plane.

“I guess the guy wanted to see the girl’s phone and she wouldn’t let him see it. The guy got angry, got up, walked down the center aisle, grabbed the spare door, ripped it off, completely. An FBI agent grabbed him, handcuffed him.” Vin explained.

JetBlue confirmed PEOPLE that the flight was transferred to another plane after the incident. The plane landed safely in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

PEOPLE says the JetBlue passenger has been charged. He was also arraigned Wednesday, Jan. 8 in the East Boston Division of Boston Municipal Court. Massachusetts State Police said the identity of the passenger will remain withheld pending charges. They also noted that they do not consider the incident a security threat.

“Preliminary information indicates that this is an isolated incident and we do not believe this incident poses a threat to public safety,” The Massachusetts State Police said in a statement.
