Inspirations behind the big Netflix games and pressing transmedia limits
Netflix games I made a panel of inspiration behind the matches with great effort at Netflix and the shows they are based on.
Jason Altman, Transmedia’s leader at Netflix, led a panel of the Netflix Games side event at the Game Developer Conference.
Bill Jackson of Netflix Games said the Unleashed squid game was a huge opportunity, but he added: “We knew it should be fine.” He said the show was quite dark and the game team decided that it should be a variety of it and make it easier.
“The results are that this is a very different entry point in the world and a different expression of Fandom,” Jackson said.
He said the company insisted on expressing the world in the squid games to come out with something different. Having a cartoon style of playing a serious show with many killings was a very different twist and a little risky move.
There was a crossover opportunity with skins and awards, he said. The game felt what part of the streaming series you watched at Netflix and it gave you rewards based on this progress.
Albert Kim said his game in Electric State is a companion to the hit movie of Netflix Movie Electric State. Jason said the game has a retro feeling and allows you to deepen in the relationship of brother and sister in the show.
“He is emotionally moving from the point of view of Michelle and Chris and a metal layer of them that play a game,” Kim said.
He wants fans who dive into the world to feel really whole. Charlie Booker, creator of Black Mirror, said the games are different because the player is very different. At Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, he said the player was an “antagonist” on the Bandersnatch show, which gave the audience a chance to choose where the story should continue and what a finish should be. This was given by an agency to the players.
Kim said it would be interesting to influence Netflix shows. Altman said he wanted to see that Netflix wants to explore the boundaries of transmedia and the type of games that can be made uniquely in Netflix. There are potential for more watch features where the games respond to the player.
“Netflix is a place for experimentation where we can explore the borders,” Altman said. “Players want to live the worlds they love in a new way.”
