The 8 best mattresses we slept on (2025)

I remember my First Topper mattress. It was bright blue, made entirely of thin foam and a random evening was purchased from Amazon. I used it to try to relieve some of my back pain on the super slim mattress I had in my days after college. It didn’t do much – it was just a thin sheet of foam on an equally thin mattress. I thought after this experience that mattress tops were almost pointless, but a boy, I was wrong. While the Topper mattress cannot save you from the need for a more maintaining mattress or a new one after the mattress is old too old, the top can easily improve the feeling of a mattress and give you a better night’s sleep.

After testing 16 mattress tops, these are our favorite, ranging from soft options and memory foam to the best companies and hybrid tops. All these mattresses have been tested against unpleasantly solid mattresses to see how many pillow they provide if they can add additional maintenance or cooling and whether they can really make your sleep better. Like someone who has been impressed with mattresses in the past, I am now hooked to have one for a good night’s sleep.

Types of mattress toppers

Wool: The wool mattresses are usually filled with wool or filling – think about the things that fill the quilt or upholstered chair – and wrapped in cotton. It is soft but not as soft as the foam from memory and not as springy as latex. The wave is a good temperature regulator, so it is a nice choice for hot sleepers.

Pillow on top: Pillow mattresses are designed to have the fluffy pillow feeling on top of your mattress. The inside of the top of the pillow can vary: some add a pillow design to the layers of foam, while others are just a strap layer down the feathers between you and your mattress. Our favorite peak of the pillow uses latex, but still has a fluffy, slightly sinking feeling of laying a pillow.

Latex: Latex is a produced substance made of rubber trees. This rubber base gives it a pleasant bounce and spring compared to the foam from the memory. Although not labeled like foam, latex topper usually has foam similar to memory foam as its base. In addition, it is sometimes called an organic human -created because its base is a natural substance, but it must be processed to become a latex you would sleep on or use in other products. You will get less latex sinking than foam from memory and less heat retention.

Memory foam: The foam from the memory is actually a polyurethane (plastic polymer) foam created by adding other compounds – the exact combination of compounds varies depending on the company – to the polyurethane to create the foam itself from the memory. It is also known as a “high -resistance” low -resistance polyurethane foam (LRPU). It is designed to match your body, but to return to its original form afterwards; The name “memory” comes from remembering its original form. Memory foam tends to be one of the soft toppers and there is a lot of sinking (which you can love, you can hate) and tend to maintain more heat. Some companies add additional ingredients such as a cooling gel or graphite to make the foam cooling.

Calm foam: Serene Foam is a more new trademark material created by Carpenter Co., the company mother of Casper Sleep. It is made of billions of polyurethane bubbles such as memory foam, but also consists of microscopic air capsules. It is designed to deal with some of the disadvantages of traditional memory foam, including heat retention and variable levels of hardness, while maintaining the same teddy, lining pressure sensation. A quick warning if you like a heating pad: a polyurethane calm foam is not recommended for use with heated devices such as electric blankets or heating pads.

Hybrid: Topors Hybrid Mattresses use multiple fillings that can be found on their own. These combinations can vary; Our favorite Helix hybrid topper uses coils and foam, while Hybrid Topper of Viscosoft uses a mixture of memory foam and soft fibers to feel a pillow. If you feel that a type of topper does not meet your needs – whether it is too soft or not soft enough – the hybrid option may be most suitable for you.
