Emergency services and local media said at least 30 people were injured, some seriously, when a lift collapsed at the Astún ski resort in Spain’s Pyrenees mountain range on Saturday.

It is reported that the condition of 9 of the injured is very serious, and the other eight are in moderate condition.

The state TVE channel said that about 80 people were trapped in the elevator. The cause of the incident is still unknown.

Several helicopters are operating in the area to rescue the skiers still trapped and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

In images and videos shared on social networks, several people were seen lying on the snow under the ski lift.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his “shock” at the news of the accident and said he was close to the injured and their families.
