The Switch 2 controllers seem to function like mice

early this morning Nintendo has revealed the first look in its successor to the Nintendo Switch, seemingly and aptly named the Nintendo Switch 2. In the short video showing some differences from its predecessor. As part of this, a brief scene of the Switch 2’s controllers — called joycons in the original Switch by Nintendo — is shown sliding across the surface, seemingly functioning as a computer mouse.

There’s no accompanying text or narrative to go along with this, so at best right now all we can do is speculate. A side view of the joycon seems to show what looks like an optical sensor or something. If so, that would mean the joycons could work somewhat like a computer mouse on a flat surface with the Switch 2.

In terms of gaming capabilities, this can provide a more precise control method for games that require fine movements. Games with manipulable cursors, such as real-time strategy titles, can simply use a mouse without the need to connect actual mouse hardware. It could even be used for archers, but that would probably depend a lot on accuracy and speed.

There are even other games, like Nintendo’s own Super Mario Maker series, that struggled a bit with controller-only interpretations, but could find new life with a competent manipulable cursor.

Until Nintendo decides to show off this feature (or dismiss it all as speculation), it’s all just speculation. The earliest we’ll learn new information about the system and its software is early April, according to today’s video.
