“I would stay away (from dating actors),” Plaza, 40, quipped during a September 2024 appearance on SiriusXM The Howard Stern Show. “I’m married to a writer/director. I’ve never dated an actor (or been with an actor for a long time).”
She added: “I think about it and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t want to be with myself’ or ‘I don’t want to do this.’ But sometimes I see there are so many pairings and you’re like, “Wow, look at them.” They should really laugh.”
Plaza married Baen in 2020 after ten years of dating. He died on Friday, January 3, at the age of 47, according to medical examiner’s records reviewed Us Weekly.
Baena’s case status is listed as “open” with an examination already scheduled, according to the medical examiner’s website. The cause of death has not been released and Plaza has not spoken publicly about his death. Us Weekly reached out for comment.
The Agatha all together the actress and Baena first crossed paths in 2011, later tying a knot to celebrate their 10th anniversary.
“A lot of things happened to me during COVID. Yes, we got married. It’s a big deal,” Plaza recalls coming in December 2021 on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “One night we got a little bored. We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. It’s real, look.”
At the time, she added: “We were on lockdown. Things have gotten a little crazy, especially in my house. My husband was very into the tie, and when I say tie, I mean 50 shirts a day.’
Plaza and Baena were married at home.
“I very quickly created an altar of love in our yard. The facts of our love, pebbles, smoke, fire. Things like that,” she reminded host Ellen DeGeneres. “Then a man from the Alhambra appeared in a Hawaiian shirt with a briefcase (to perform the ceremony). … I don’t remember much, it was vague. But I’m pretty sure it’s legit.”
Plaza was then able to use their new lives as inspiration for her character in White Lotus Season 2. (Plaza was played by Harper, who was married.)
“That character is me,” Plaza quipped GQ in November 2022 “It’s probably the first project I’ve ever done and I’m like, wow, this is really close to home. … I have no children. My husband and I have been together for 12 years. My attitude is that there are ups and downs in a relationship and I go through a rough patch and compare myself to another couple that seems perfect.’
In addition to their solo careers, Plaza and Baena have also worked together on films Life after Beth, The Small Hours and Spin me.
“She is wonderful. I would work with her if she wasn’t my wife, but luckily she is my wife,” Baena told Reel Talker in August 2022. “To be able to do something creative (together) where we’re both happy is that rare?”
