The amazing post-credits scene of The Squid Game season 2 is explained by the creator
This article contains major spoilers for “Squid Game” season 2.
Directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the first season of The Squid Game ended with a winner. Player 456, Song Gi-hoon (Lee Jung-jae), was the last man alive, winning 45.6 billion won and changing his life forever. At the end of the second season of “The Squid Game”, Gi Hoon not only returned to the game, but also but after seven episodes the games were still on. With the players divided into two factions – those who want to keep playing and those who want to go home while there’s still a chance – Gi-hoon leads a rebellion against the guards, which unfortunately fails almost as quickly as it started. This shocking event will certainly keep viewers enthralled until Season 3 airs sometime in the summer of 2025, but for those wise enough to stay close to the credits, there’s an even bigger mystery hanging over the games.
In a post-credits scene that only lasted a few seconds, several players (096, 100, and 353) timidly approach Young-hee, the disturbing giant robot girl which controls the game Red Light, Green Light, but it faces a new game card, the sunset. As cute and innocent as she looks, those who have seen The Squid Game know that she is a harbinger of destruction – an angel of death. Could it be a different gaming industry in a different country, for example the upcoming Netflix spin-off series is produced by David Fincher? However, the players and Young Hee are not alone. This clip has another giant robot doll, but this one resembles a young boy wearing a striped polo shirt and a small hat. He is in front of Yeon Hee and the stop light flashes from red to green before the footage fades to black.
Thankfully, Hwang Dong Hyuk explained what’s going on with this mysterious new doll and what fans can expect in Season 3.
Squid Game’s new doll is called Cheol-su
Both dolls appear to have sensors in their eyes we at /Film have already theorized that this may be done to combat players hiding their moves behind the players in front of them from Yeon Hee’s view, or that this is perhaps a nod to an earlier iteration of the game from years ago. However, in a conversation with Entertainment WeeklyHwang Dong-hyuk explained that the doll’s name is Cheol-soo and that the post-credits scene is not only a teaser for Season 3, but also a brand new game. As he explained:
“This is actually (the look of) Cheol Soo, who, like Yeon Hee, is the new giant doll that we’re going to show off in season 3, and it’s also a hint of the most exciting game in season 3, like So, although it’s still has not been shared, I hope everyone will be happy to meet Cheol-su and the new game.”
The addition of Cheol-su, a new game map, and the visual of a flashing red light and green train light as opposed to Yeon-hee announcing the change and turning her head means that either this is a very different version of the game from what viewers are used to seeing, or it’s a whole different game. One prevailing theory is that Yeon-hee and Cheol-soo together indicate that they are playing Jack and Jill, noting that Cheol-soo and Yeon-hee are also the names of the two children featured in the illustrations school textbooks in Koreawith the western counterparts of “Jack and Jill”.
To play Jack and Jill, players start at the bottom of a hill and roll different colored dice to climb to the top depending on the color of the dice. With each throw, the players also spin the wheel. When pointing to a well, they stay put. When he points to the bucket, the player returns to the bottom of the hill. The first to reach the top and spin the wheel pointing to the well wins.
We’ll have to wait until The Squid Game Season 3 airs this summer to find out if the cast of the show will be doing Jack and Jill or something else entirely.
