The South Korean parliament has voted to impeach Yoon Suk Yeol for attempted martial law
“People, we hope that your end of the year will now be a little happier and that all of your canceled year-end celebrations will resume,” National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik announced as he announced the result.
“The future of the Republic of Korea and our hope is in the hands of the people, our hope is strong,” said Woo, a member of the main opposition Democratic Party.
There is overwhelming public support for Yoon’s impeachment — recent polls show three-quarters of South Koreans want him gone.
The constitutional court now has 180 days to rule on Yoon’s impeachment or reinstatement. If the impeachment decision is adopted, the next presidential election must be scheduled within 60 days.
Yoon was ousted while Prime Minister Han Duck-soo became acting president.
However, Han and Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok, who is next in line for the presidency, are involved in an ongoing police investigation into last week’s events.
In a statement after the vote, Yoon said he had “temporarily suspended my journey” but “will never give up.”
“I will take your criticism, praise and support wholeheartedly and will do my best for the country until the end,” he said.
Outside the National Assembly, where tens of thousands of protesters gathered throughout the day despite the bitter cold, many spoke of their determination to see Yoo leave office for good.
