The Nvidia RTX 5090 can cost more than most gaming PCs
We know quite a bit about Nvidia’s anticipated GeForce RTX 50 series graphics cards, but the only lasting consideration beyond their core values is their price. According to recent leaks and rumors, the top-end RTX 5080 and Nvidia RTX 5090 may require users to open their wallets wide enough to accommodate one of these massive card rumors. Prominent tipsters are hinting that the 5090 could cost 40% more than the 4090 at launch.
Nvidia has not yet confirmed that the 50th series even exists, let alone shared pricing details, but there are enough leaks and rumors to suggest the cards will be expensive. Twitter tipster @wnxodwho shared some accurate information about the hardware, posted an image of a product list for the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 in Chinese yuan. As observed by WCCFTech over the weekend, the cards will cost 18,999 yuan and 9,999 yuan, respectively. That would be close to $2600 and $1400 USD for the 5090 and 5080.

None of this should be reflected in the price of the Nvidia RTX 5080 and 5090. These numbers have not been confirmed and US prices will differ from Chinese prices with the 13% VAT in China. With that tax, the price of the 5090 would be closer to $2,200. Still, we fully expect the rumored top-end Blackwell GPUS to cost more than the 40 series. Rumors based on Google Search listings show 5090 with 32GB GDDR7 memory. More leaks mention that the 5090 will have 21,760 FP32 CUDA cores, 5,000 more than the last generation. According to a leak, the 5080 should be slightly better than its Ada Lovelace counterpart, with 16GB of VRAM and 1024 more CUDA cores.
Even if the Chinese prices are accurate, Nvidia could change things before launch. However, it hints that Nvidia’s next-gen cards could cost nearly 40% more than the 4090 at launch. This 2022 GPU cost $1,600 in October 2022. The RTX 4080 cost $1,200 when it debuted. Today you can find both for less, though not by much. They will continue to drop in price thanks to the 50 Series, although it will take time to see Blackwell drop similarly.
Over the weekend, YouTuber Vex also shared leaked pricing information pointing to the price of the Series 50 cards in Australia. According to the YouTuber, the 5080 could cost upwards of 2,500 AUD or over $1,500 in the US. These SKUs are for the alleged Asus DUAL variant, although we don’t know exactly what configuration it will feature.
Everything we know at this point is speculation and should be taken with a grain of salt. All expectations for the next top-end GPU point to much more expensive cards than ever before, which makes me shudder to think about the pricing of any laptop that dares to put Nvidia’s top-end GPU inside.
That’s why the price of the rumored RTX 5070, 5060 and 5060 Ti will be so crucial. All of these cards are supposed to be upgrades over the 40 series, but with smaller gains. The RTX 5080, especially the 5090, seems to be tailored for AI processes, graphics and gaming. The leaked amount of VRAM on both high-end cards would be especially important for working with AI capabilities. The 5060 and 5060 Ti will be much more conservative, according to a report by WCCFTech. The 5060 is supposed to have only 8GB of VRAM. The Ti version will get 16GB, the same as the 5070 (rumored by @kopite7kimi) and 5080.
Nvidia doesn’t have much competition for the top end of GPUs. Rumors suggest that AMD will also share information about its RX 8000 series maps. We still don’t know if the alleged price of the next-gen RTX is equivalent to their actual performance. At least we won’t have to wait too long to find out. CES 2025 is set to begin on January 6. Nvidia’s main note will be held that day, 6:30 PM PT and 9:30 PM ET.
