Ipswich ‘not far away’ after Chelsea win

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna says his side are “not too far away” after a first Premier League home win of the season lifted them to 18th in the table.

Liam Delap’s penalty and Omari Hutchinson’s low strike eliminated Chelsea and will give the Tractor Boys belief until 2025.

They are just one point behind Wolves and two ahead of Everton.

McKenna said: “It was all I needed, I thought we came out really quick, really aggressive, we tried to dominate the game. “I thought Liam (Delap) was amazing tonight. It was one of many incredible performances tonight.

“There has been hope in the performances in general, we have been competing in almost every game. If you do, you always have a chance. We are only a few points short of what we could have had.

“Getting three points tonight is always welcome, of course. We’re in games and we’re not too far off.”

“We have to move on”

Delap was a thorn in Chelsea’s side throughout, scoring and assisting in the Premier League for the second time this season and scoring Town’s first penalty in the top flight since November 2001.

He told Sky Sports: “We’ve worked hard this season and it hasn’t gone well. The performances deserved a win and we showed today that we’re excellent and we defended well, we attacked them well. We’re buzzing.”

“We had three or four chances where we didn’t get the penalty that we probably deserved, so it was nice to get it and put it in the back of the net. I’ve practiced them a million times, so I just aim for the corner and put it there.

“I don’t think it will change much. We’ve played so well in other games this season, but we haven’t got the result. We didn’t finish our chances or concede late. We just have to keep going and get more wins.”
