When we test mattresses, we have an established process that evaluates key factors such as firmness, feel and performance. Determining the best hypoallergenic mattresses involves checking that all materials are allergy safe. We then dive further into the construction of the bed, considering how each layer can contribute to its hypoallergenic qualities.
Hardness: We lie on any mattress and simulate sleep in all positions: stomach, back, side and combined. Using our experience of testing nearly 300 different mattresses, we examine their construction and analyze how soft or firm one bed is compared to others.
Feel it: This is where we deal with beds. We touch and feel the mattresses and observe what the material does. Is it light and bouncy like latex foam or slow and dense like memory foam?
Endurance: We can’t lie on every mattress for years, so it’s hard to say exactly how long each bed will last. We can get an idea of the durability of a bed by looking at its construction. Steel coil beds are generally more durable and stronger than full foam mattresses.
Body type: We use construction and feel to determine how well a bed will fit all body types, including heavier or lighter people or couples. Hybrid mattresses with steel coils tend to be more supportive and longer lasting than all-foam mattresses for those on the heavier side.
Sleeping position: We get real physical exercise and flip mattresses, testing every sleeping position: side, back, stomach and combination.
Traffic isolation: With one or preferably two people on the mattress, we jump and bounce around to see how much movement can be detected in the bed. We also put a glass of water on the edge of the bed and bounce around to see how much it moves.
Edge support: We analyze mattress materials and physically lie on each edge of the mattress to feel how well it will help us feel healthy.
temperature: We use hotbeds to test and determine how cool the bed sleeps. We also look at its materials and construction. Has the brand added any special technology to make sleeping cooler?
