204 members of the House of Representatives voted against a bill to provide life-saving treatment to babies who survive abortion.
The House of Representatives adopted a draft law that provides for the punishment of doctors who do not provide life-saving assistance to babies born alive after an attempted abortion.
All but one Democrat voted in favor of the bill, which passed by a vote of 204 to 217. One Democrat, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas, voted “present.”
The bill directs health professionals to treat a baby born with a heartbeat after an abortion with “the same level of professional skill, care and diligence” as during a normal birth. Doctors who violate the rules will be fined or imprisoned for up to 5 years.

House GOP leaders praised the bill, with Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., telling Fox News Digital: “Requiring medical care for babies born alive after a botched abortion is not controversial, it’s common sense.”
“Democrats supporting infanticide rather than voting for this bill shows how extreme and out of touch their party is,” Emmer said.
Democrats have argued that the bill is unnecessary given existing laws against infanticide and murder, and could endanger the lives of women seeking late-term abortions due to medical emergencies while unfairly punishing doctors.

“Nobody goes through a pregnancy and everything that comes with it … and then eight or nine months later it’s like, ‘nah, I don’t want to do this,'” said D-Calif. Rep. Sarah Jacobs. The bill’s discussion added that late-term operations account for about 1% of abortions. “It’s related to a serious fetal abnormality or maternal health.”
He said the bill was “not based on science or reality.”
A few Who are the Democrats? Because they opposed the bill, they underwent emergency abortion procedures and did not get pregnant.
Among them is Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez, D.M., who said the bill would allow women “to die on the operating table because doctors are afraid of going to jail.”

Republicans, meanwhile, have argued that the bill would prevent babies from “dying in a closet, alone and discarded as medical waste,” as Rep. Michelle Fischbach, R-Minn., said during the debate.
