“I just thought I love Gothic, let’s get a little fun. Let’s make Gothic.” These are the words of the author Dennis Lekhan, who say that he inspired him to write “Shutter Island”, his famous novel that would eventually be adapted to the screen in 2010 Martin Scarsez may be our greatest live director. Lehanan, speaking over Featurett for the release of the Blu-ray movie called “For Academy”, explained that he tried to consider the state of the world in the early 2000s and decided to tell the fairy tale in 1954 in the midden Makartism.

Inspired by the classics such as the “Manchurian candidate” and “invasion of Bodysnatchers”, he decided to write a story with “a completely unreliable narrator”. Published in 2003, the book’s rights were quickly torn off by Columbia Pictures before they made their way and then sold by Phoenix Pictures. That’s when the Scars and his frequent employee of Leonard Dikaprio turned on. Get out of the best win “Start”, This turned out to be a very wise decision, as the “shutter island” is still one of the largest hits of the legendary director.

In the fairy tales this week we look out of the “Zasovka Island” in 15 years. We will reconsider how the film appeared as a big turn affected the production that happened when it reached the theaters what happened after the release, and what lessons we can learn from it all these years later. Let’s dig, don’t you?

Movie: Shutter Island

The “Zasovka Island” is focused on Teddy Dicaprio, a US marshal who goes to the shelter for criminal insane on the island. However, what begins as a routine investigation of the inexplicable disappearance of the patient at the facility makes a sinister turn when the story unfolds and the mystery deepens. On the way of Teddy and his partner Chuck (Mark Rufala) are revealing more and more intricate truths about the island, ending with the final shock opening of the film.

“I worked on some other own projects, and they were not ready,” Scarsz said, explaining how he got involved with the film in the shutters. “The script was sent to me. I certainly knew about Dennis Lekhan’s prose (…), but I knew nothing about the story. I started reading it around 10:30 at night. I needed to go to sleep because I had Get up the next day to do that -no early morning, but I found that I can’t put the scenario. “

By that time, the Scorez had already secured his heritage, and “went”, finally providing it as a very deserved best picture and the best director Oscar. Although the Scars – a famous fan of horror moviesDuring his glorious career, he did not try the genre very much, except, apparently, “Cape -Strah”. To date, the “shutter island”, although it is usually described as a psychological thriller, to date the most obvious punching in the waters of horror. It was a departure, probably.

Scorez and Dikaprio have been cooperating several timesStarting with the New York gangs 2002. But if it is not broken, do not correct. At that moment, the wilderness was in the midst of his strength as a movie star, and he fully devoted himself to Ted Daniels’ role.

“You ask me questions I don’t even know, and I created it,” Lehan said, commenting on Tedi Dikaprio’s deep study in the same Featurettt. “I really wanted to make Teddy,” said Dikaprio, discussing his approach to the character.

The island of the shutter was going to live or die its creepy, big end of turn

“Shutter Island” is a mysterious box of the film, and for most of its performance, the audience believes that the hero is wildly trying to get to all this. SpoilersBut we will eventually find out that Teddy is a patient on the island and that all things were difficult to make him reconcile with the terrible tragedy he suffered. Just like M. Night Schamalan struck the “sixth feeling”, Scarseze’s film almost completely relied on his turn.

“I found that a way to build a script, in particular, the ending, which, I think, is somewhat different from the book, but especially the ending did it for me,” said Scarse about turning in the same Featurett. Laeta Kalogridis (“Alexander”) prescribed the adaptation of Lekhan’s novel and, to the eyes of the Scorsese, brought a satisfactory conclusion.

Dr. James Giligan, a psychiatric professor, served as a movie advisor. Speaking to the Billy rays, entitled “In the Lighthouse”, he shared that he appreciated what the movie was reflected with what was happening to Teddy (unreal, though it may be):

“It is true that the film is significantly departing from the literal reality in the sense of how I or any other psychiatrist went to try to treat people who were cruel and mentally ill way, some metaphorically what happened in the minds of the main characters” .

“We were really lucky that Dr. James Giligan is a technical advisor,” Chases added to the same Featurette. “His book about violence is a classic. He was not only power, but also understood the nature of the story of history.”

Financial travel

Paramount Pictures distributed the movie and largely sold it, focusing on the fact that it was perverted acute sensations – one that had one of the most favorite actors of the cinema in its center and collaborated (again) with the master. The studio and various financiers needed a movie to decide what with a “shutter island”, which has a large budget 80 million. Even by the standards of 2010, it is a lot of money on non-franchise, focused on adults, R-rating thriller. Fortunately, he played very well for the overall audience.

The “Zasovka Island” reached theaters on February 19, 2010. And too late and too early for the company of the awards season, Paramount saw it as more Popcorn entertainment, a commercial game. Fortunately, he released the movie at the perfect time because there was nothing. Yes, “Avatar” James Cameron was on the weekend 10 of its inappropriate, record mileage about the box officeBut in addition, the Scarseze had a clear runway. His thriller led home schedules with $ 41 million.

Only before the easy competition from “COP” Kevin Smith and Remyko’s Crazies in the second weekend was easy to go to the first place with $ 22.6 million in the second weekend. Surely its domination at the top ended over the next weekend when Possible Hit Tim Burton “Alice in Wonderland” went to town. By the time, however, it was clear that the film had succeeded for Paramount.

Overall, they said that the “island -Zasovka” ended at $ 128 million at the domestic level to go $ 171.4 million abroad for a total of $ 299.4 million. It was even more than “gone” ($ 291 million), making it the biggest financial blow of Scsese to this point. Then he would go to the top of this record in a few years “Wolf with Wall -Rate” (392 million dollars), which remains it the biggest movie if -no.

The island of the shutter was somewhat separate, main commercial success

Scorsese applied some of the greatest films of all time and peoples: from “future bull” to “goodfellas” and all between them. Again, the man came out of the best victory. However, the critics of the day were somewhat warm on the “shutter”. Currently it has good but not very high approval rating 69% Rotten tomatoes. It is definitely not all, the end of the whole metric, but it helps to draw the image. At the time, many would probably call the movie “Medium Scars”.

Since the film did not deserve serious awards, it had to get settled on becoming a pretty big manufacturer of money. There are worst things. But time has a funny way to switch the prospect. In 2020, honoring the 10th anniversary of the movie, /Josh Spiegel’s film wrote a work in which he announced “Alanda Zasovka”, one of the “bewildered masterpieces”. This is a movie that was good, perhaps because it is more difficult to get a movie for adults in theaters these days, in a small part of the spread of the pandemic.

As additional evidence that the film’s profile grew for its original reception, HBO Once Plans to Make a “Father’s” series involving Scorses. It has never come true, but it talks about how it was more than simple today, and tomorrow left. It was a damn beautiful picture with a great lead performance and, depending on how you ask, the wild sucker of the end. What else can be asked?

Lessons contained inside

Looking back, “the island of the shutter” is a good reminder that sometimes it takes a little time to really appreciate. The overall audience was certainly entertained at the time, as evidenced by a healthy fare, but may not feel that it received a simple respect for Dikaprio/Scarseze. This is just the character of the beast.

The “Zasovka Island” is also a reminder that there is a horror, and it was almost always a reliable crowd. Scarsez put his stamp on the genre in his own way, and he paid off. There is the reason that he was Nominated for a better Oscar director than any other live director. It is great that the whole thing started as a scenario he received during the preparation of other possible projects, pushing him to say, “Yes, let’s do it,” and turn it into a big blow. This is how good the Scorez is.

Will the Scores come back to horror or anything adjacent to horrors? Who knows. It doesn’t become younger and he just lined up Next collaboration with Dicaprio (what will also star “The Rock” Johnsonamazing enough). Whatever he does, and whoever he decides to do so we must know so far to trust him. Perhaps nothing demonstrates it better than the movie, as good and successful as the “shutter” in any way is regarded as a medium -level effort. Any other director will be so lucky. As for the rest of us? We were just lucky to have a scarlet.
