You are the ghost in Steven Soderbergh’s new movie Haunted House.
last year, In a violent nature turned the slasher genre on its head by telling a classic “dead body in the desert” story from the point of view of a lumbering killer. this year, presence offers a different kind of perspective shift on a horror film by telling a haunted house story from the ghost’s point of view. That he’s from the A-list directing team Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Kopp does presence even more curiosity.
Here is the latest trailer for presencestarring Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Kalina Liang, Eddie Madey, West Mulholland and Julia Fox.
The voyeuristic, crawling camera is obviously a key component in the presenceas the main character – the full description of the film is simply “a family moves into a suburban house and convinces itself that they are not alone” – stalks and hovers around the family that has moved into her territory. This trailer highlights the scary elements of the film and tells us that the ghost is “suffering”, which is never a good quality when the veil is pierced.
Unlike other stories about ghost characters trying to deal with living people suddenly thrown into their midst – think The others or Beetlejuice—presence leans into this uncomfortably creepy POV, and at least from the trailer we have no idea what form the spirit takes or if it even manifests.
It would be an intriguing project no matter what, but coming from Soderbergh (Oscar winner for directing Traffiche has also done films as diverse as Erin Brockovich, contagionon on the ocean heist movies, and Magic Mike) and Koep (screenwriter of jurassic park, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulland 2002 Spidermanto name a few; he also directed his share of horror films including Stirring the echo and Secret window) increases its potential.
presence hits theaters January 24. Will you be hitting the trails to see it?
