Why the season 10 finale of Bones was written as a series finale

Bones may have been off the air for a few years, but that doesn’t mean its fans are any less devoted. Thanks in no small part to constant reruns on cable and viewers discovering the show on air, it remains extremely popular. The series mainly focuses on Temperance “Bones” Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI Special Agent Seely Booth (David Boreanaz) who work together to solve murders. “Bones” aired on Fox and was mostly filmed in Los Angelesalthough it technically takes place in Washington

After all, Bones ran for a whopping 12 seasons, ending in 2017. So when the season 10 finale of Bones aired, viewers were treated to two full seasons of adventures with Brennan and Booth. However, at the time, the show’s creators had to treat the season 10 finale as if it could be the series finale. Executive producer Stephen Nathan spoke TV guide in 2015 and broke down what happened. First, the season 10 finale of “Bones” that fans saw was not the episode that the show’s creators had originally planned. So why would they change course? As Nathan explained:

“We were actually planning a very different end to the season, a much more traditional cliffhanger and a situation that would take us into season 11. But the pickup we’ve always been waiting for didn’t happen for many reasons. were beyond our control.”

However, when the update came from the network, it was too late to change course again. So the season 10 finale had to move forward as written. Nathan added that the show’s creators aren’t going to risk further disappointing fans, explaining:

“Then we were told, ‘This could be the end of the series.’ We realized that we could not disappoint or alienate the viewers and fans who have been so important to us for ten years (…) and compromise with the series This could possibly be the last episode in history. So we had to write a series finale that hopefully contained the atmosphere of the time continuum.”

The season 10 finale, titled “The Next in the Last”, first aired in June 2015. In this episode, the Jeffersonian team discovers the remains of a victim at a crime scene, which points to a possible protégé of the serial killer Christopher Pelant, aka Hacktivist, is the villain who scared the crap out of Deschanel. This then leads them to revisit their previous work on Pelant while investigating new clues that will hopefully lead them to the copycat killer. Meanwhile, Brennan and Booth are looking at options outside of the Jeffersonian and the FBI, which is the thread that is being pulled to make this episode feel like a finale.

In fact, the series’ 10th season was iconic for other reasons as well. for one, Bones Season 10 featured the death of John Francis Daly Sweets. It was also the moment that “Bones” was on the air for a full decade. It is difficult to maintain a certain level of quality for so long. To that end, Nathan explained why the episode could have served as a fitting end to the show, even though things went wrong:

“We all talk about endings, and you get some kind of ending, but there’s only one ending in life that’s final, and that’s death. Other than that, it’s just a change. Brennan always said, “There is no such thing as closure.” Everyone wants to wrap something up in a nice, neat ribbon and say, “Okay, it’s done. Now it will begin.” Life doesn’t work that way, and Booth and Brennan pretty much proved that it did.”
