Former actress Sister Claire Crockett claims to be a saint almost nine years after her death.

The late Northern Ireland man was canonized as a candidate for sainthood during a ceremony held in Madrid, Spain on Sunday, January 11, according to BBC. The ceremony which was broadcast by Crockett’s family and friends in her hometown of Londonderry, comes two months after the Catholic Church officially declared Crockett a Servant of God, one of the first steps in the canonization process.

“Never in a million years did we think she would become a nun, never mind make her way to the saints,” Sister Crockett said. Shawna Gilltold the BBC on the eve of the ceremony. “A lot of people have asked us about grieving for Claire, but I don’t think we’ve ever grieved for Claire because she’s talked about every day.”

Gill went on to joke: “Our Claire would love all the attention and drama about her. But Sir Claire would like to be in the background – I don’t think she would like to be in the spotlight.’

Crockett died at the age of 33 in the 2016 earthquake in Ecuador, where she was teaching music. Before becoming a nun, she starred in a 2002 TV movie Sundaytrans IMDband turned down the role of host on Nickelodeon.

In the testimony given through her Sister Clara and Associates websiteCrockett described herself as a “little (or a lot) wild child” growing up. “I got my first job at Channel 4 in England when I was fifteen, then I had a few small jobs as a TV presenter and when I was eighteen I had a small part in a film,” she wrote. “I loved theater, as much as acting, as well as writing, reading and directing. My goal was Hollywood…seriously. Why couldn’t it be? Besides, the mommy reader said I’d be (um, um).”

It was at the age of 16 that she “started to feel an emptiness inside me” after working in television. “Being a presenter is not for me, I thought and turned down the offer to work on the famous Nickelodeon channel,” she explained.

She officially became a nun at the age of 18 in 2001. “She took her first vows on February 18, 2006, taking the monastic name of Clare Mary of the Trinity and Heart of Mary. She made her eternal vows on September 8, 2010,” reads the biography on her website.

Gill told the BBC on Sunday that she and Crockett’s loved ones were “very proud of her, nervous about the unknown because no one has ever experienced this in our lives”, adding: “The support we have has been incredible.”

As the publication notes, the proclamation of the Servant of God is one of the first steps to becoming a saint – a long process that can last several years after a person’s death. Additional steps before canonization include showing evidence of “heroism” and verifying the miracle caused by prayers addressed to the person.
