Once you’ve decided between meal kits or food delivery, you’ll want to find a service within your budget. There are recipe meal kits for as low as $6 per serving with basic menus and no-frills recipes. More expensive services include recipes with more exotic ingredients, high-quality cuts of meat and organic produce, but can cost up to $15 or $20 per serving.

Meal kit or ready meal delivery

The first big decision you’ll make is whether you want meal kits, which require some prep and cooking, or a meal service that sends fully cooked meals ready to heat up and eat. Meal kits will require more of your time and energy, but will also cost a little less per serving. Prepared meals require almost no time and energy beyond what is needed to actually eat the food, but they usually cost a few dollars more per serving.

Healthiness

Although most food delivery services have healthy options, some are much healthier than others. If you like to eat low-calorie, low-carb, plant-based or fish-based meals, certain meal kits and meal delivery services are better than others. This list of the healthiest food delivery services for 2025 is a good place to find the most nutritious options.

Number of meals per week

With almost any service, the more meals or portions in your delivery order, the cheaper each meal becomes. Ideally, you’ll want to determine exactly how much food makes sense for your household. If you can’t imagine cooking more than twice a week, don’t order more than two sets of meals because they usually won’t last more than a week in the fridge.

Most ready meals either arrive frozen or can be frozen after unpacking. This means it’s less of a problem if you order too many dishes on your first trip. Most services allow you to change the number of meals or portions in your plan even after you’ve started.
