South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles traveled 250 km (155 miles) before landing in the sea.
North Korea has fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles into the sea near the country’s east coast, according to South Korea’s military.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the missile launches were detected at around 9:30 a.m. local time (00:30 GMT) on Tuesday and are believed to have been fired from North Korea’s Jagang province, Yonhap news agency reported.
The missiles traveled 250 km (155 miles) before landing in the sea, South Korea’s military said.
The JCS said it was preparing for additional missile launches and that the South Korean military had stepped up monitoring of North Korean activities and closely shared information with its US and Japanese counterparts, “maintaining a state of full readiness”.
South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, said the country would respond strongly to North Korea’s latest missile launch and condemned Pyongyang’s continued violation of UN Security Council resolutions banning such weapons tests.
Tuesday’s launches are the second so far this year since North Korea tested a new type of hypersonic intermediate-range missile on January 6. .
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has vowed to expand his stockpile of nuclear weapons to fight rival nations, and at a political conference at the end of the year, Kim said he would pursue the “toughest” policy against the United States yet.
He also criticized Washington’s efforts to strengthen security cooperation with Seoul and Tokyo, which North Korea views as the development of a “nuclear military bloc for aggression” aimed at toppling its regime.
