Jim Morrison’s brother reflects on the Doors singer’s final days

Jim Morrisonbrother Andy Morrisonhas given a rare interview about the late Doors frontman in a new documentary series Before the End: In Search of Jim Morrison.

​​​​​​While many theories have emerged in the years since the rocker was found dead in 1971, Andy offered a simple explanation for his brother’s death.

“His lifestyle (killed him). He obviously had too much to drink,” Andy said in the series. “I think he was overweight by then and, you know, when you’re in bad health and you’re drinking too much and doing some drugs, it’s not that hard to do.”

Jim’s body was found on July 3, 1971, in the bathtub of a Paris apartment rented by his girlfriend at the time. Pamela Courson. The official cause of his death was heart failure, but an autopsy was not performed because it was not required by French law.

A new documentary series explores a long-held conspiracy theory by some Doors fans that Jim faked his own death to escape the pressures of fronting the world-famous rock band.

At least Jim left the US for Paris to take a break from the Doors after the band finished their album LA woman.

“I think he actually wanted to get back to serious writing. And maybe he outgrew the Doors, that was enough,” Andy said Before the end. “Was he 100 percent ready, I think not. I think he just needed a break.”

A few years ago, the Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger dismissed theories that his former bandmate was still alive somewhere, in part because he didn’t think Jim could actually have left music.

From directors to artists, Hollywood lost some stars in 2025. On January 4, news broke that Aubrey Plaza’s husband, Jeff Baena, had died a day earlier at the age of 47. “When he went to Paris, ostensibly to get away from it all, all he did was jump on stage with these cool house bands and get drunk and sing,” Krieger, 79, said. People in 2021 “He couldn’t help it. That’s why I know he’s dead. Because if he were alive, he would be somewhere on the stage.”

Krieger didn’t like that Doors keyboard player either Ray Manzarek sometimes fanning the flames, hinting that Jim might still be alive. (Manzarek died in 2013 at the age of 74.)

“I loved talking to Ray and he always said, ‘I wouldn’t be surprised if Jim showed up.’ And I was like, ‘Come on, man, you don’t believe that, do you?'” Krieger said. Classic rock magazine in 2020 “It was largely bullish. Yes, he didn’t have to do that.”
