I’m a huge horror fan, but there are usually two things that stop me from seeing a scary movie: bad reviews and a bad cover. Unfortunately, in 2015 The last girl suffers from both, so I continued to ignore the movie no matter how many times my various algorithms shoved it in my face. I finally gave in and watched this movie for free on Tubi, and I’m happy to report that despite what the haters say, it’s almost perfect horror movie.

The final composition of the girl attracts attention

The cast The last girl is pretty thin, but it has some pretty big names in it, including Abigail Breslin (best known for Little Miss Sunny) as the titular final girl and Wes Bentley (best known for American beauty and Interstellar) as her no-nonsense trainer. She is trained by a mysterious organization that gives her James Bond-level skills to help her kill bad guys. In this film, the bad guys in question are a quartet of hit men led by a charismatic sociopath (Alexander Ludwig, best known for The hunger games and Vikings TV show).

While it may not be for everyone, I really enjoyed it The last girl for its low-key narrative, including the fact that we don’t get a lot of concrete information about who the mysterious organization is, what its purpose is, or even the exact year of the period. It’s the ultimate show don’t tell horror movie, and that’s only fitting thanks to director Tyler Shields. Shields is actually a photographer by trade, and to his credit, he infuses every frame of the film with a signature style that strikes a balance between whimsical excess Zack Snyder and the arthouse minimalism of Jim Jarmusch.

Buffy fans take note

Abigail Breslin in The Last Girl.

If you like horror movies, you might like it The last girl subverts expectations in a subtle tradition Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The bad guys are a quartet of young assassins whose dark tricks include picking an unsuspecting target, taking her to the woods, and revealing their plan to hunt and kill her in tuxedos. They assume that Breslin’s hero will be their next target, not knowing that she has trained her whole life to kill such scum in the most brutal and creative ways.

The film is equally creative, but it can be hard to appreciate if you don’t look past its very tropical design. It’s basically a classic revenge story with a twist of the would-be victim willing to turn the tables, a bit like what you’d get if Buffy Summers hunted human monsters instead of the undead. Despitesome very familiar tropes, the dialogue in this film is sparkling, the cinematography is breathtaking, and the kills are both unpredictable and satisfying, making this film more than the sum of its trope parts.

Not enough reviews

Unfortunately, not everyone appreciated it The last girl almost as much when it came out (first through a limited theatrical release and later through video on demand). incl Rotten tomatoesthe film currently holds a 25 percent critical score, albeit from only 12 critics. And while all fans love to say that critics have done their favorite movies a dirty trick, this is one case where most critics were really wrong when they complained about things like a simple plot and a film that was too violent. What did they expect from a horror the movie?

It is true that The last girl won’t blow your mind with the convoluted plot of a Chris Nolan film, but I’d argue that the best slashers are the ones that stick to the classic formula of films like Friday the 13th while managing to surprise us with several unexpected twists. That’s exactly what The last girl does: It takes the formula of hunting down and killing unsuspecting victims in the woods, but makes those victims potential victims. The result is a rare horror movie where we can root for a brutal killer while she’s busy killing the scariest people.

Will you find it? The last girl as exciting as I am, or would you agree with the critics that this attempt at a quirky slasher falls short of the cinematic artery? The only way to find out is to stream it for free on Tubi. I’ll leave you with a simple reminder that I wish someone had shared with me when this movie came out in 2015: It’s very, a lot better than its awful cover might imply.
