A new kind of video doorbell from SwitchBot solves a long-standing problem
I’m a fan of SwitchBot’s no-nonsense, responsive home tech designso I was interested to see what they brought to CES. Among their many devices was video doorbell unlike any I had seen before, and it could be the way forward for user-friendly front door security.
Let me explain: video doorbells already pair well with smart displayswhich allow you to look through the doorbell, receive ring notifications and speak on the visitor’s speaker. But it can be complicated and expensive to set up (plus a bad fit if you don’t like voice assistants). The SwitchBot Video Doorbell comes with its own 4.3-inch touchscreen display that can be placed on any nearby surface or conveniently wall-mounted for instant, informative communication.

SwitchBot’s separate see-and-talk display through the doorbell can go with you and is perfect for aging in place.
The display lets you listen for bells, peek out of your bell whenever you want, and activate audio mode to talk to a person, all with large buttons that make it convenient for people in your seat. Users can also expand the monitor with up to 512 GB of built-in storage to solve their problems video storage concerns without a subscription.
Besides the innovative display, I was also impressed by the SwitchBot’s video doorbell. It combines 2K resolution with a wide viewing angle of 165 degrees, color night vision and AI motion detection to determine if a person is approaching and other details. It’s also compatible with Alexa if you’d rather go the Echo route.

The doorbell can be screwed into place, but there’s also an adhesive mount option, something I don’t think I’ve ever seen in a video doorbell before, but has the potential to make setup extremely easy. For people looking for a multi-functional video doorbell that’s easy to use, this looks like a competitive option. I look forward to testing it to see how it performs, how well the simple design could work for seniors aging in place, and how accurate The bell’s AI is.
